The proton is a subatomic particle with the symbol p or p+ and a positive electric charge of 1 elementary charge. One or more protons are present in the nucleusof each atom. The number of protons in each atom is its atomic number. The name proton was given to the hydrogen nucleus by Ernest Rutherford in 1920, because in previous years he had discovered that the hydrogen nucleus (known to be the lightest nucleus) could be extracted from the nuclei of nitrogen by collision, and was thus a candidate to be a fundamental particle and building block of nitrogen, and all other heavier atomic nuclei.

In the modern Standard Model of particle physics, the proton is a hadron, composed of quarks. Prior to that model becoming a consensus in the physics community, the proton was considered a fundamental particle. In the modern view, a proton is composed of three valence quarks: two up quarks and one down quark. The rest masses of the quarks are thought to contribute only about 1% of the proton's mass. The remainder of the proton mass is due to the kinetic energyof the quarks and to the energy of the gluon fields that bind the quarks together.

Because the proton is not a fundamental particle, it possesses a physical size—although this is not perfectly well-defined since the surface of a proton is somewhat fuzzy, due to being defined by the influence of forces that do not come to an abrupt end. The proton is about 1.6–1.7 fm in diameter.[2]

The free proton (a proton not bound to nucleons or electrons) is a stable particle that has not been observed to break down spontaneously to other particles. Free protons are found naturally in a number of situations in which energies or temperatures are high enough to separate them from electrons, for which they have some affinity. Free protons exist in plasmas in which temperatures are too high to allow them to combine with electrons. Free protons of high energy and velocity make up 90% of cosmic rays, which propagate in vacuum for interstellar distances. Free protons are emitted directly from atomic nuclei in some rare types ofradioactive decay. Protons also result (along with electrons and antineutrinos) from the radioactive decay of free neutrons, which are unstable.

At sufficiently low temperatures, free protons will bind to electrons. However, the character of such bound protons does not change, and they remain protons. A fast proton moving through matter will slow by interactions with electrons and nuclei, until it is captured by the electron cloud of an atom. The result is a protonated atom, which is a chemical compound of hydrogen. In vacuum, when free electrons are present, a sufficiently slow proton may pick up a single free electron, becoming a neutral hydrogen atom, which is chemically a free radical. Such "free hydrogen atoms" tend to react chemically with many other types of atoms at sufficiently low energies. When free hydrogen atoms react with each other, they form neutral hydrogen molecules (H2), which are the most common molecular component of molecular clouds in interstellar space. Such molecules of hydrogen on Earth may then serve (among many other uses) as a convenient source of protons for accelerators (as used in proton therapy) and other hadron particle physics experiments that require protons to accelerate, with the most powerful and noted example being the large hadron collider.

Description

Protons are spin-½ fermions and are composed of three valence quarks,[3] making them baryons (a sub-type of hadrons). The two up quarks and one down quark of the proton are held together by the strong force, mediated by gluons.[2] A modern perspective has the proton composed of the valence quarks (up, up, down), the gluons, and transitory pairs of sea quarks. The proton has an approximately exponentially decaying positive charge distribution with a mean squareradius of about 0.8 fm.[4]

Protons and neutrons are both nucleons, which may be bound by the nuclear force into atomic nuclei. The nucleus of the most common isotope of the hydrogen atom (with the chemical symbol "H") is a lone proton. The nuclei of the heavy hydrogen isotopes deuterium and tritium contain one proton bound to one and two neutrons, respectively. All other types of atoms are composed of two or more protons and various numbers of neutrons.

Stability

The spontaneous decay of free protons has never been observed, and the proton is therefore considered a stable particle. However, some grand unified theories of particle physics predict that proton decay should take place with lifetimes of the order of 1036 years, and experimental searches have established lower bounds on the mean lifetime of the proton for various assumed decay products.

Experiments at the Super-Kamiokande detector in Japan gave lower limits for proton mean lifetime of 6.6×1033 years for decay to an antimuon and a neutral pion, and 8.2×1033 years for decay to a positron and a neutral pion.[5] Another experiment at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory in Canada searched for gamma rays resulting from residual nuclei resulting from the decay of a proton from oxygen-16. This experiment was designed to detect decay to any product, and established a lower limit to the proton lifetime of 2.1×1029 years.[6]

However, protons are known to transform into neutrons through the process of electron capture (also called inverse beta decay). For free protons, this process does not occur spontaneously but only when energy is supplied. The equation is:

The process is reversible; neutrons can convert back to protons through beta decay, a common form of radioactive decay. In fact, a free neutron decays this way, with a mean lifetime of about 15 minutes.

Quarks and the mass of the proton

In quantum chromodynamics, the modern theory of the nuclear force, most of the mass of the proton and the neutron is explained by special relativity. The mass of the proton is about 80-100 times greater than the sum of the rest masses of the quarks that make it up, while the gluons have zero rest mass. The extra energy of the quarks and gluons in a region within a proton, as compared to the rest energy of the quarks alone in the QCD vacuum, accounts for almost 99% of the mass. The rest mass of the proton is, thus, the invariant mass of the system of moving quarks and gluons that make up the particle, and, in such systems, even the energy of massless particles isstill measured as part of the rest mass of the system.

Two terms are used in referring to the mass of the quarks that make up protons: Current quark mass refers to the mass of a quark by itself, while constituent quark mass refers to the current quark mass plus the mass of thegluon particle field surrounding the quark.[7] These masses typically have very different values. As noted, most of a proton's mass comes from the gluons that bind the constituent quarks together, rather than from the quarks themselves. While gluons are inherently massless, they possess energy— to be more specific, quantum chromodynamics binding energy (QCBE)—and it is this that contributes so greatly to the overall mass of the proton (seemass in special relativity). A proton has a mass of approximately 938 MeV/c2, of which the rest mass of its three valence quarks contributes only about 11 MeV/c2; much of the remainder can be attributed to the gluons'QCBE.[8]

The internal dynamics of the proton are complicated, because they are determined by the quarks' exchanging gluons, and interacting with various vacuum condensates. Lattice QCD provides a way of calculating the mass of the proton directly from the theory to any accuracy, in principle. The most recent calculations[9][10] claim that the mass is determined to better than 4% accuracy, even to 1% accuracy (see Figure S5 in Dürr et al.[10]). These claims are still controversial, because the calculations cannot yet be done with quarks as light as they are in the real world. This means that the predictions are found by a process of extrapolation, which can introduce systematic errors.[11] It is hard to tell whether these errors are controlled properly, because the quantities that are compared to experiment are the masses of the hadrons, which are known in advance.

These recent calculations are performed by massive supercomputers, and, as noted by Boffi and Pasquini: "a detailed description of the nucleon structure is still missing because ... long-distance behavior requires a nonperturbative and/or numerical treatment..."[12] More conceptual approaches to the structure of the proton are: the topological soliton approach originally due to Tony Skyrme and the more accurate AdS/QCD approachthat extends it to include a string theory of gluons, various QCD-inspired models like the bag model and the constituent quark model, which were popular in the 1980s, and the SVZ sum rules, which allow for rough approximate mass calculations. These methods do not have the same accuracy as the more brute-force lattice QCD methods, at least not yet.

Charge radius

The internationally-accepted value of the proton's charge radius is 0.8768 fm (see orders of magnitude for comparison to other sizes). This value is based on measurements involving a proton and an electron.

However, since 5 July 2010, an international research team has been able to make measurements involving an exotic atom made of a proton and a negatively-charged muon. After a long and careful analysis of those measurements, the team concluded that the root-mean-square charge radius of a proton is "0.84184(67) fm, which differs by 5.0 standard deviations from the CODATA value of 0.8768(69) fm".[13] In January 2013 an updated value for the charge radius of proton—0.84087(39) fm was published. The precision was improved by 1.7 times, but the difference with CODATA value persisted at 7σ significance.[14]

The international research team that obtained this result at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) in Villigen (Switzerland) includes scientists from the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics (MPQ) in Garching, the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) Munich and the Institut für Strahlwerkzeuge (IFWS) of the Universität Stuttgart (both from Germany), and the University of Coimbra, Portugal.[15][16] They are now attempting to explain the discrepancy, and re-examining the results of both previous high-precision measurements and complicated calculations. If no errors are found in the measurements or calculations, it could be necessary to re-examine the world's most precise and best-tested fundamental theory: quantum electrodynamics.[17]

Interaction of free protons with ordinary matter

Although protons have affinity for oppositely-charged electrons, free protons must lose sufficient velocity (and kinetic energy) in order to become closely associated and bound to electrons, since this is a relatively low-energy interaction. High energy protons, in traversing ordinary matter, lose energy by collisions with atomic nuclei, and by ionization of atoms (removing electrons) when until they are slowed sufficiently to be captured by the electron cloud in a normal atom.

However, in such an association with an electron, the character of the bound proton is not changed, and it remains a proton. The attraction of low-energy free protons to any electrons present in normal matter (such as the electrons in normal atoms) causes free protons to stop and to form a new chemical bond with an atom. Such a bond happens at any sufficiently "cold" temperature (i.e., comparable to temperatures at the surface of the Sun) and with any type of atom. Thus, in interaction with any type of normal (non-plasma) matter, low-velocity free protons are attracted to electrons in any atom or molecule with which they come in contact, causing the proton and molecule to combine. Such molecules are then said to be "protonated", and chemically they often,

The electron (symbol: e) is a subatomic particle with a negative elementary electric charge.[8]

An electron has no known components or substructure. It is generally thought to be an elementary particle.[2] An electron has a mass that is approximately 1/1836 that of the proton.[9] The intrinsic angular momentum (spin) of the electron is a half-integer value in units of ħ, which means that it is a fermion. The antiparticle of the electron is called the positron; it is identical to the electron except that it carries electrical and other charges of the opposite sign. When an electron collides with a positron, both particles may be totally annihilated, producing gamma ray photons.

Electrons, which belong to the first generation of the lepton particle family,[10] participate in gravitationalelectromagnetic and weak interactions.[11] Like all matter, they have quantum mechanical properties of both particles and waves, so they can collide with other particles and can be diffracted like light. However, this duality is best demonstrated in experiments with electrons, due to their tiny mass. Since an electron is a fermion, no two electrons can occupy the same quantum state, in accordance with the Pauli exclusion principle.[10]

The concept of an indivisible quantity of electric charge was theorized to explain the chemical properties of atoms, beginning in 1838 by British natural philosopherRichard Laming;[4] the name electron was introduced for this charge in 1894 by Irish physicist George Johnstone Stoney. The electron was identified as a particle in 1897 by J. J. Thomson and his team of British physicists.[6][12][13]

In many physical phenomena, such as electricitymagnetism, and thermal conductivity, electrons play an essential role. An electron in motion relative to an observer generates a magnetic field, and will be deflected by external magnetic fields. When an electron is accelerated, it can absorb or radiate energy in the form of photons. Electrons, together with atomic nuclei made of protons and neutrons, make up atoms. However, electrons contribute less than 0.06% to an atom's total mass. The attractive Coulomb force between an electron and a proton causes electrons to be bound into atoms. The exchange or sharing of the electrons between two or more atoms is the main cause of chemical bonding.[14]

Electrons may be created through beta decay of radioactive isotopes and in high-energy collisions, for instance when cosmic rays enter the atmosphere. Electrons may be destroyed through annihilation with positrons, and may be absorbed during nucleosynthesis in stars. Laboratory instruments are capable of containing and observing individual electrons as well as electron plasma, whereas dedicated telescopes can detect electron plasma in outer space. Electrons have many applications, including inelectronicsweldingcathode ray tubeselectron microscopesradiation therapylasersgaseous ionization detectors and particle accelerators.

History

The ancient Greeks noticed that amber attracted small objects when rubbed with fur. Along with lightning, this phenomenon is one of humanity's earliest recorded experiences with electricity.[15] In his 1600 treatise De Magnete, the English scientist William Gilbert coined the New Latin term electricus, to refer to this property of attracting small objects after being rubbed.[16] Both electric and electricity are derived from the Latin ēlectrum(also the root of the alloy of the same name), which came from the Greek word for amber, ήλεκτρον (ēlektron).

In the early 1700s, Francis Hauksbee and French chemist C. F. du Fay independently discovered what they believed to be two kinds of frictional electricity; one generated from rubbing glass, the other from rubbing resin. From this, Du Fay theorized that electricity consists of two electrical fluids, "vitreous" and "resinous", that are separated by friction and that neutralize each other when combined.[17] A decade later Benjamin Franklin proposed that electricity was not from different types of electrical fluid, but the same electrical fluid under different pressures. He gave them the modern charge nomenclature of positive and negative respectively.[18] Franklin thought of the charge carrier as being positive, but he did not correctly identify which situation was a surplus of the charge carrier, and which situation was a deficit.[19]

Between 1838 and 1851, British natural philosopher Richard Laming developed the idea that an atom is composed of a core of matter surrounded by subatomic particles that had unit electric charges.[3] Beginning in 1846, German physicist William Weber theorized that electricity was composed of positively and negatively charged fluids, and their interaction was governed by the inverse square law. After studying the phenomenon of electrolysisin 1874, Irish physicist George Johnstone Stoney suggested that there existed a "single definite quantity of electricity", the charge of a monovalent ion. He was able to estimate the value of this elementary charge e by means ofFaraday's laws of electrolysis.[20] However, Stoney believed these charges were permanently attached to atoms and could not be removed. In 1881, German physicist Hermann von Helmholtz argued that both positive and negative charges were divided into elementary parts, each of which "behaves like atoms of electricity".[4]

In 1894, Stoney coined the term electron to describe these elementary charges, saying, "... an estimate was made of the actual amount of this most remarkable fundamental unit of electricity, for which I have since ventured to suggest the name electron".[21] The word electron is a combination of the word electric(icity) and the Greek suffix "tron", meaning roughly 'the means by which it is done'. The suffix -on which is now used to designate other subatomic particles, such as a proton or neutron, is in turn derived from electron.[22][23]

Discovery

The German physicist Johann Wilhelm Hittorf undertook the study of electrical conductivity in rarefied gases. In 1869, he discovered a glow emitted from the cathode that increased in size with decrease in gas pressure. In 1876, the German physicist Eugen Goldstein showed that the rays from this glow cast a shadow, and he dubbed the rays cathode rays.[25]During the 1870s, the English chemist and physicist Sir William Crookes developed the first cathode ray tube to have a high vacuum inside.[26] He then showed that the luminescence rays appearing within the tube carried energy and moved from the cathode to the anode. Furthermore, by applying a magnetic field, he was able to deflect the rays, thereby demonstrating that the beam behaved as though it were negatively charged.[27][28] In 1879, he proposed that these properties could be explained by what he termed 'radiant matter'. He suggested that this was a fourth state of matter, consisting of negatively charged molecules that were being projected with high velocity from the cathode.[29]

The German-born British physicist Arthur Schuster expanded upon Crookes' experiments by placing metal plates parallel to the cathode rays and applying an electric potentialbetween the plates. The field deflected the rays toward the positively charged plate, providing further evidence that the rays carried negative charge. By measuring the amount of deflection for a given level of current, in 1890 Schuster was able to estimate the charge-to-mass ratio of the ray components. However, this produced a value that was more than a thousand times greater than what was expected, so little credence was given to his calculations at the time.[27][30]

In 1892 Hendrik Antoon Lorentz suggested the idea that the mass of these particles (electrons) could be a consequence of their electric charge.[31]

In 1896, the British physicist J. J. Thomson, with his colleagues John S. Townsend and H. A. Wilson,[12] performed experiments indicating that cathode rays really were unique particles, rather than waves, atoms or molecules as was believed earlier.[6] Thomson made good estimates of both the charge e and the mass m, finding that cathode ray particles, which he called "corpuscles," had perhaps one thousandth of the mass of the least massive ion known: hydrogen.[6][13] He showed that their charge to mass ratio, e/m, was independent of cathode material. He further showed that the negatively charged particles produced by radioactive materials, by heated materials and by illuminated materials were universal.[6][32] The name electron was again proposed for these particles by the Irish physicist George F. Fitzgerald, and the name has since gained universal acceptance.[27]

Electron configuration

In atomic physics and quantum chemistry, the electron configuration is the distribution of electrons of an atom or molecule (or other physical structure) inatomic or molecular orbitals.[1] For example, the electron configuration of the neon atom is 1s2 2s2 2p6.

Electronic configurations describe electrons as each moving independently in an orbital, in an average field created by all other orbitals. Mathematically, configurations are described by Slater determinants or configuration state functions.

According to the laws of quantum mechanics, for systems with only one electron, an energy is associated with each electron configuration and, upon certain conditions, electrons are able to move from one configuration to another by emission or absorption of a quantum of energy, in the form of a photon.

For atoms or molecules with more than one electron, the motion of electrons are correlated and such picture is no longer exact. An infinite number of electronic configurations are needed to exactly describe any multi-electron system, and no energy can be associated with one single configuration. However, the electronic wave function is usually dominated by a very small number of configurations and therefore the notion of electronic configuration remains essential for multi-electron systems.

Electronic configuration of polyatomic molecules can change without absorption or emission of photon through vibronic couplings.

Knowledge of the electron configuration of different atoms is useful in understanding the structure of the periodic table of elements. The concept is also useful for describing the chemical bonds that hold atoms together. In bulk materials this same idea helps explain the peculiar properties of lasers and semiconductors.

Electron configuration was first conceived of under the Bohr model of the atom, and it is still common to speak of shells and subshells despite the advances in understanding of thequantum-mechanical nature of electrons.

An electron shell is the set of allowed states electrons may occupy which share the same principal quantum numbern (the number before the letter in the orbital label). An atom's nth electron shell can accommodate 2n2 electrons, e.g. the first shell can accommodate 2 electrons, the second shell 8 electrons, and the third shell 18 electrons. The factor of two arises because the allowed states are doubled due to electron spin—each atomic orbital admits up to two otherwise identical electrons with opposite spin, one with a spin +1/2 (usually noted by an up-arrow) and one with a spin −1/2 (with a down-arrow).

A subshell is the set of states defined by a common azimuthal quantum number, ℓ, within a shell. The values ℓ = 0, 1, 2, 3 correspond to the spd, and f labels, respectively. The maximum number of electrons which can be placed in a subshell is given by 2(2ℓ + 1). This gives two electrons in an s subshell, six electrons in a p subshell, ten electrons in a d subshell and fourteen electrons in an f subshell.

The numbers of electrons that can occupy each shell and each subshell arise from the equations of quantum mechanics,[2] in particular the Pauli exclusion principle, which states that no two electrons in the same atom can have the same values of the four quantum numbers.[3]

Notation

Physicists and chemists use a standard notation to indicate the electron configurations of atoms and molecules. For atoms, the notation consists of a sequence of atomic orbital labels (e.g. for phosphorus the sequence 1s, 2s, 2p, 3s, 3p) with the number of electrons assigned to each orbital (or set of orbitals sharing the same label) placed as a superscript. For example, hydrogen has one electron in the s-orbital of the first shell, so its configuration is written 1s1Lithium has two electrons in the 1s-subshell and one in the (higher-energy) 2s-subshell, so its configuration is written 1s2 2s1 (pronounced "one-s-two, two-s-one"). Phosphorus (atomic number 15) is as follows: 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p3.

For atoms with many electrons, this notation can become lengthy and so an abbreviated notation is used, since all but the last few subshells are identical to those of one or another of the noble gases. Phosphorus, for instance, differs from neon (1s2 2s2 2p6) only by the presence of a third shell. Thus, the electron configuration of neon is pulled out, and phosphorus is written as follows: [Ne] 3s2 3p3. This convention is useful as it is the electrons in the outermost shell which most determine the chemistry of the element.

The order of writing the orbitals is not completely fixed: some sources group all orbitals with the same value of n together, while other sources (as here) follow the order given by Madelung's rule. Hence the electron configuration of iron can be written as [Ar] 3d6 4s2 (keeping the 3d-electrons with the 3s- and 3p-electrons which are implied by the configuration of argon) or as [Ar] 4s2 3d6 (following the Aufbau principle, see below).

The superscript 1 for a singly occupied orbital is not compulsory. It is quite common to see the letters of the orbital labels (s, p, d, f) written in an italic or slanting typeface, although the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) recommends a normal typeface (as used here). The choice of letters originates from a now-obsolete system of categorizing spectral lines as "sharp", "principal", "diffuse" and "fundamental" (or "fine"), based on their observed fine structure: their modern usage indicates orbitals with an azimuthal quantum numberl, of 0, 1, 2 or 3 respectively. After "f", the sequence continues alphabetically "g", "h", "i"... (l = 4, 5, 6...), skipping "j", although orbitals of these types are rarely required.[4][5]

The electron configurations of molecules are written in a similar way, except that molecular orbital labels are used instead of atomic orbital labels (see below).

Energy — ground state and excited states

The energy associated to an electron is that of its orbital. The energy of a configuration is often approximated as the sum of the energy of each electron, neglecting the electron-electron interactions. The configuration that corresponds to the lowest electronic energy is called the ground state. Any other configuration is an excited state.

As an example, the ground state configuration of the sodium atom is 1s22s22p63s, as deduced from the Aufbau principle (see below). The first excited state is obtained by promoting a 3s electron to the 3p orbital, to obtain the 1s22s22p63p configuration, abbreviated as the 3p level. Atoms can move from one configuration to another by absorbing or emitting energy. In a sodium-vapor lamp for example, sodium atoms are excited to the 3p level by an electrical discharge, and return to the ground state by emitting yellow light of wavelength 589 nm.

Usually the excitation of valence electrons (such as 3s for sodium) involves energies corresponding to photons of visible or ultraviolet light. The excitation of core electrons is possible, but requires much higher energies generally corresponding to x-ray photons. This would be the case for example to excite a 2p electron to the 3s level and form the excited 1s22s22p53s2 configuration.

The remainder of this article deals only with the ground-state configuration, often referred to as "the" configuration of an atom or molecule.

History

Niels Bohr was the first to propose (1923) that the periodicity in the properties of the elements might be explained by the electronic structure of the atom.[6] His proposals were based on the then current Bohr model of the atom, in which the electron shells were orbits at a fixed distance from the nucleus. Bohr's original configurations would seem strange to a present-day chemist: sulfur was given as 2.4.4.6 instead of 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p4 (2.8.6).

The following year, E. C. Stoner incorporated Sommerfeld's third quantum number into the description of electron shells, and correctly predicted the shell structure of sulfur to be 2.8.6.[7] However neither Bohr's system nor Stoner's could correctly describe the changes in atomic spectra in a magnetic field (the Zeeman effect).

Bohr was well aware of this shortcoming (and others), and had written to his friend Wolfgang Pauli to ask for his help in saving quantum theory (the system now known as "old quantum theory"). Pauli realized that the Zeeman effect must be due only to the outermost electrons of the atom, and was able to reproduce Stoner's shell structure, but with the correct structure of subshells, by his inclusion of a fourth quantum number and his exclusion principle (1925):[8]

It should be forbidden for more than one electron with the same value of the main quantum number n to have the same value for the other three quantum numbers k [l], j [ml] and m [ms].

The Schrödinger equation, published in 1926, gave three of the four quantum numbers as a direct consequence of its solution for the hydrogen atom:[2] this solution yields the atomic orbitals which are shown today in textbooks of chemistry (and above). The examination of atomic spectra allowed the electron configurations of atoms to be determined experimentally, and led to an empirical rule (known as Madelung's rule (1936),[9] see below) for the order in which atomic orbitals are filled with electrons.

 

Aufbau principle and Madelung rule

The Aufbau principle (from the German Aufbau, "building up, construction") was an important part of Bohr's original concept of electron configuration. It may be stated as:[10]

a maximum of two electrons are put into orbitals in the order of increasing orbital energy: the lowest-energy orbitals are filled before electrons are placed in higher-energy orbitals.

The principle works very well (for the ground states of the atoms) for the first 18 elements, then decreasingly well for the following 100 elements. The modern form of the Aufbau principle describes an order of orbital energies given by Madelung's rule (or Klechkowski's rule). This rule was first stated by Charles Janet in 1929, rediscovered by Erwin Madelung in 1936,[9] and later given a theoretical justification by V.M. Klechkowski[11]

  1. Orbitals are filled in the order of increasing n+l;
  2. Where two orbitals have the same value of n+l, they are filled in order of increasing n.

This gives the following order for filling the orbitals:

1s, 2s, 2p, 3s, 3p, 4s, 3d, 4p, 5s, 4d, 5p, 6s, 4f, 5d, 6p, 7s, 5f, 6d, 7p, (8s, 5g, 6f, 7d, 8p, and 9s)

In this list the orbitals in parentheses are not occupied in the ground state of the heaviest atom now known (Uuo, Z = 118).

The Aufbau principle can be applied, in a modified form, to the protons and neutrons in the atomic nucleus, as in the shell model of nuclear physics and nuclear chemistry.

Periodic table

Electron configuration table

The form of the periodic table is closely related to the electron configuration of the atoms of the elements. For example, all the elements of group 2 have an electron configuration of [E] ns2 (where [E] is an inert gas configuration), and have notable similarities in their chemical properties. In general, the periodicity of the periodic table in terms of periodic table blocks is clearly due to the number of electrons (2, 6, 10, 14...) needed to fill s, p, d, and f subshells.

The outermost electron shell is often referred to as the "valence shell" and (to a first approximation) determines the chemical properties. It should be remembered that the similarities in the chemical properties were remarked more than a century before the idea of electron configuration.[12] It is not clear how far Madelung's rule explains(rather than simply describes) the periodic table,[13] although some properties (such as the common +2 oxidation state in the first row of the transition metals) would obviously be different with a different order of orbital filling.

Shortcomings of the Aufbau principle

The Aufbau principle rests on a fundamental postulate that the order of orbital energies is fixed, both for a given element and between different elements; neither of these is true (although they are approximately true enough for the principle to be useful). It considers atomic orbitals as "boxes" of fixed energy into which can be placed two electrons and no more. However the energy of an electron "in" an atomic orbital depends on the energies of all the other electrons of the atom (or ion, or molecule, etc.). There are no "one-electron solutions" for systems of more than one electron, only a set of many-electron solutions which cannot be calculated exactly[14] (although there are mathematical approximations available, such as theHartree–Fock method).

The fact that the Aufbau principle is based on an approximation can be seen from the fact that there is an almost-fixed filling order at all, that, within a given shell, the s-orbital is always filled before the p-orbitals. In ahydrogen-like atom, which only has one electron, the s-orbital and the p-orbitals of the same shell have exactly the same energy, to a very good approximation in the absence of external electromagnetic fields. (However, in a real hydrogen atom, the energy levels are slightly split by the magnetic field of the nucleus, and by the quantum electrodynamic effects of the Lamb shift).

Ionization of the transition metals

The naive application of the Aufbau principle leads to a well-known paradox (or apparent paradox) in the basic chemistry of the transition metalsPotassium and calcium appear in the periodic table before the transition metals, and have electron configurations [Ar] 4s1 and [Ar] 4s2 respectively, i.e. the 4s-orbital is filled before the 3d-orbital. This is in line with Madelung's rule, as the 4s-orbital has n+l  = 4 (n = 4, l = 0) while the 3d-orbital has n+l  = 5 (n = 3, l = 2). However, chromium and copper have electron configurations [Ar] 3d5 4s1 and [Ar] 3d10 4s1 respectively, i.e. one electron has passed from the 4s-orbital to a 3d-orbital to generate a half-filled or filled subshell. In this case, the usual explanation is that "half-filled or completely filled subshells are particularly stable arrangements of electrons".

The apparent paradox arises when electrons are removed from the transition metal atoms to form ions. The first electrons to be ionized come not from the 3d-orbital, as one would expect if it were "higher in energy", but from the 4s-orbital. The same is true when chemical compounds are formed. Chromium hexacarbonyl can be described as a chromium atom (not ion, it is in the oxidation state 0) surrounded by six carbon monoxide ligands: it isdiamagnetic, and the electron configuration of the central chromium atom is described as 3d6, i.e. the electron which was in the 4s-orbital in the free atom has passed into a 3d-orbital on forming the compound. This interchange of electrons between 4s and 3d is universal among the first series of the transition metals.[15]

The phenomenon is only paradoxical if it is assumed that the energies of atomic orbitals are fixed and unaffected by the presence of electrons in other orbitals. If that were the case, the 3d-orbital would have the same energy as the 3p-orbital, as it does in hydrogen, yet it clearly doesn't. There is no special reason why the Fe2+ ion should have the same electron configuration as the chromium atom, given that iron has two more protons in its nucleus than chromium and that the chemistry of the two species is very different. When care is taken to compare "like with like", the paradox disappears.[16]

Other exceptions to Madelung's rule

There are several more exceptions to Madelung's rule among the heavier elements, and it is more and more difficult to resort to simple explanations such as the stability of half-filled subshells. It is possible to predict most of the exceptions by Hartree–Fock calculations,[17] which are an approximate method for taking account of the effect of the other electrons on orbital energies. For the heavier elements, it is also necessary to take account of theeffects of Special Relativity on the energies of the atomic orbitals, as the inner-shell electrons are moving at speeds approaching the speed of light. In general, these relativistic effects[18] tend to decrease the energy of the s-orbitals in relation to the other atomic orbitals.[19]

در مورد جمله زیر می تونیم get را به کار نبریم.

امروز وقت ندارم.

و جمله را به شکل زیر بیان کنیم که خیلی راحت تر و بهتره.

که البته کاربرد جمله اولی رایج تره یعنی فعل جمله را به صورت مثبت به کار ببریم و بعدش یک no بیاریم که معنی جمله منفی بشه.

ولی بعضی جاها هم باید از get استفاده کرد مثل جمله زیر:

دیشب چه ساعتی رسیدی خونه؟

و اما take

عجله ای نیست. وقت داری اون تمرین ها رو هم حل کنی.

بهتره بگیم:

اما در جمله زیر کاربرد take کاملا بجاست.

در زبان انگلیسی تفاوت آشکاری بین woman و wife وجود دارد . wifeزنی است که بامردی ازدواج کرده است و اکنون همسر اوست .اما کلمه woman عمومیت دارد.

در این معنی نمی توانیم کلمه hair را به صورت جمع استفاده کنیم ودر واقع یک اسم غیر قابل شمارش محسوب می شود .البته اگر منظورمان یک یا چند رشته مو باشد می توانیم این کلمه را جمع ببندیم مانند:

He means that he has started it, but has not finished it yet.

He is in the middle of reading it.

اسمها

اسم‌ها گسترده‌ترین اقسام کلمات را تشکیل می‌دهند. بطور کلی در زبان انگلیسی می‌توان اسامی را در دو دسته طبقه‌بندی کرد: اسامی قابل شمارش و اسامی غیر قابل شمارش:

اسامی قابل شمارش آن دسته از اسامی هستند که می‌توانند شمرده شوند. این بدین معنی است که می‌تواند بیش از یکی از آنها وجود داشته باشد.

اسامی غیر قابل شمارش اسامی هستند که قابل شمردن نیستند (مانند water یا آب). این اسامی تنها بصورت مفرد بکار می‌روند و حالت جمع ندارند.

اسمهای قابل شمارش:

1- می‌توانند به دنبال an، a یا one بیایند.

2- می‌توانند به دنبال these، few، many و those بیایند.

3- می‌توانند به دنبال یک عدد (مثلاً two ،three و ...) بیایند.

2- می‌توانند به دنبال much و little بیایند.

3- به راحتی می‌توانند به دنبال اصطلاحاتی از قبیل most of the، all of the، all the و half the بیایند.

1- می‌تـوان بسیـاری از اسمهای غیر قابل شمارش را بـا استفـاده از بعضی کلمات و عبارات، به قابل شمارش تبدیل کرد. از جمله می‌توان به

2- لغت news مانند یک اسم جمع به نظر می‌رسد، ولی در حقیقت یک اسم مفرد غیر قابل شمارش است:
  • There is no important news in the newspapers.

جمع

بیشتر اسمها قابل شمارش هستند و می‌توانند به صورت جمع درآیند. معمولاً برای اینکه یک اسم مفرد به صورت جمع درآید، یک -s به انتهای آن اضافه می‌کنیم:

ولی آن دسته از اسامی که به ch، x، z، s یا sh ختم می‌شوند، -es می‌گیرند:

حالت ملکی را اغلب به صورت دیگری هم می‌توان بیان کرد: (قاعده: X's Y= the Y of X)

my daughters'room = the room of my daughters
the ship's side = the side of the ship

اما بهتر است آنجا که صحبت از انسان، گروههای انسانی (مانند دولتها، کمیته‌ها، هیئتها و...)، کشورها، حیوانات و... به میان می‌آید از همان ساختار X's Y استفاده شود.

تلفظ پایانه‌های s و ed

پایانه‌ها (یا پسوندهای) s و ed دو تا از متداول‌ترین پایانه‌ها (endings) در زبان انگلیسی هستند. قواعد تلفظ آنها تغییر ناپذیر است و برای انواع مختلف کلمات یکسان است.

1- در کلماتی که به یکی از صداهای //، //، //، //، // و // ختم می‌شوند، پایانه s صدای /IZ-/ می‌دهد:

refuses, passes, judges, watches, garages, wishes.

2- پس از حروف صدادار و نیز کلماتی که به یکی از صداهای //، //، //، //، //، //، //، //، // و // ختم می‌شوند، پایانه s صدای /z-/ می‌دهد:

boys, lies, ways, pubs, words, pigs, loves, bathes, rooms, turns, things, walls, cars.

3- پس از حروف بی‌صدای //، //، //، // و // پایانه s صدای /s-/ می‌دهد:

cups, cats, walks, laughs, tenths.

پایانه ed برای ساختن زمان گذشته ساده و نیز قسمت سوم افعال با قاعده به کار می‌رود:

اسم ( Noun

تعریف : اسم کلمه ای است که برای نامیدن هر چیز . شخص و یا مکان بکار می رود

مثال : Book - Ali – Home – Ahmad – Helena – Mother – Tatiana – Michael …

 

بعضی از اسامی در زبان انگلیسی مرکب (Compound Noun ) هستند مثل : Note + book Tea + pot Work + man Step + mother Coal + mine Address + book

 

(انواع اسمها Kinds of Nouns )

 

در زبان انگلیسی چهار نو ع هستند :

 

1. اسم عام Common Noun

2. اسم خاص Proper Noun

3. اسم معنی Abstract Noun

4. اسم جمع Collective Noun

 

اسم عام : اسمی است که در میان عده ای از اشیاء اشخاص و مکان عمومیت داشته باشد . مثل : Pencil Boy Cinema Girl Desk

 

اسم خاص : اسمی است که نام مخصوص شخص شئ یا مکان معینی باشد مثل : Iran Ali Azadi square Kerman shah

 

اسم معنی : اسم حالت عمل یا وضعیت را اسم معنی گویند و به خودی خود وجود ندارد و آنرا باید در وجود اشیاء یا اشخاص احساس کرد مثل : Kindness Pain Speed Health

 

اسم جمع : اسمی است که در صورت مفرد هستند ولی در معنی به گروه و دسته دلالت می کنند مثل : Army Navy Team Police Class Crowd

 

این اسامی را معمولا با فعل مفرد به کار می برند ولی بعضی از آنها با فعل جمع همراهند . مثل :

اسم جمع همراه با فعل مفرد : The class has an English lesson everyday. There was a large crowd in the street.

اسم جمع همراه با فعل جمع : There were a lot of people at the street. The police have captured the thieves.

 

 

اسم های قابل شمارش (Countable ) و غیر قابل شمارش (Uncountable) :

 

اسم های قابل شمارش اسم هایی هستند که بتوان قبل از آنها اعداد یا a و an به کار برد و یا بتوان آنها را جمع بست . اما اسم های غیر قابل شمارش را نمی توان با اعداد استفاده کرد یا جمع بست .

 

مثال برای اسم قابل شمارش We have four children, three sons & a daughter.

مثال برای اسم غیر قابل شمارش I went out to breathe in some fresh air.

پسوند های اسم ساز :

می توانیم با استفاده از افعال اسم های معنی را بسازیم اما متاسفانه قانون خاصی وجود ندارد که نشان دهد چه پسوند ی با کدام فعل اسم را تشکیل می دهند . بعضی از پسوند های اسم ساز عبارتند از:

(Ice - ion – ment- Ence – ance – ing – al – y ) و مثال آنها عبارتند از :

نکته : بعضی از اسم های معنی از اسم عام درست می شوند . مثل :

Child بچه Childhood بچگی King پادشاه Kingship پادشاهی Fool ابله Folly حماقت

 

 

جمع بستن اسم ها :

اسامی را معمولا با افزودن(s) جمع می بندند Book Books Car Cars Word Words

 

اما بعضی از اسامی به شکل دیگر جمع بسته می شوند :

 

الف : اسامی که به( o- ch – sh – ss – x - or z ) ختم می شوند با اضافه کردن( es ) در آخر اسم جمع بسته می شوند مثل : Class Classes Dish Dishes Church Churches Box Boxes Tomato Tomatoes

 

ب : اسامی که به( y ) ختم می شوند که در شکل جمع( y ) حذف می شود و( ies ) در آخر اسم اضافه می شود . مثل : Baby Babies Lady Ladies Country Countries

 

نکته : اگر اسمی به( y ) ختم شود و حرف قبل از( y ) یکی از حروف صدا دار باشد( y ) حذف نمی شود و آن اسم با( s ) جمع بسته می شود. مثل : Day Days Boy Boys

 

ج : اسامی که به( f or fe ) ختم می شوند که عبارتند از:

( calf , half , knife , leaf , life , loaf , self sheaf , shelf , thief , wife , wolf )

 

و در شکل جمع( f or fe ) حذف می شود و در آخر اسم( ves ) اضافه می شود . مثل : Wife Wives Wolf Wolves

 

د : اسامی که شکل جمع آنها با شکل مفرد متفاوت است . مثل : Foot Feet Mouse Mice Man Men Woman Women Tooth Teeth

 

حالت مالکیت اسم( The possessive form of Noun )

 

برای ساخت حالت مالکیت یک اسم دو راه وجود دارد .یکی استفاده از‘sو دیگری اسم + of

 

حالت اول : s مالکیت

 

این حالت را می توان با افراد گروهی از افراد همچون شرکت ها و غیره و دیگر موجودات زنده مکانها و زمانها به کار برد .

 

1) اگر اسامی ما اسامی مفرد و یا اسامی جمع بی قاعده ( که به s ختم نمی شوند ) باشند در حالت مالکیت به انتهای آنها (‘s ) اضافه می کنیم . مثل : Philip‘s car The city‘s new theatre The college‘s administration

 

2) اگر اسامی ما اسامی جمع با قاعده باشند که به s ختم می شوند در حالت مالکیت به انتهای آنها ( ) اضافه می کنیم . مثل :

The boys’ boots The companies’ difficulties

 

3) برای ساختن حالت مالکیت در نامهایی که به s ختم می شوند می توانیم به انتهای آنها(‘) و یا(‘s) اضافه کنیم. مثل :

It’s Derek Jones’ (or Derek Jones’s ) new car .

 

نکته : معمولا وقتیکه معنی واضح است می توانیم اسم بعد از‘s را حذف کنیم .

Whose hat is this? Richard’s

 

4) هر گاه چندین اسم در جمله پشت سر هم باشد و بخواهیم به آنها‘s اضافه کنیم ‘s را تنها به آخرین اسم اضافه می کنیم .

Jack and Mike’s car Mr. and Mrs. Smith’s house

 

5) حالت مالکیت در اسامی مرکب به این صورت است که آخرین کلمه در اسم مرکب‘s می گیرد

 

My brother-in-law’s book

 

حالت دوم : اسم + of

 

برای بیان مالکیت میان اشیا از این الگو استفاده می کنیم . مثل : The roof of the room The name of the book

 

1) گاهی اوقات می توانیم به جای حالت بالا از ( اسم + اسم ) استفاده کنیم . مثل : The garage door The shop owner

 

2) با عبارات زیر از اسم + of باید استفاده کرد .

The beginning / end / top / bottom / front / back / middle / side The back of car the beginning of month

 اسم مصدر Gerund

در انگلیسی اسم مصدر را با اضافه کردن ingبه انتهای شکل ساده فعل بوجود می آورند . اسم مصدر در جمله همانند اسم عمل می کند .

smoking – swimming – speaking – watching

موارد استفاده از اسم مصدر به شرح زیر می باشد :

1-به عنوان مبتدای جمله

Learning English is not difficult.

 

2-به عنوان مفعول جمله که در این حالت پس از برخی از افعال بکار میرود .

I like swimming in the river.

 

تذکر : افعالی که پس از آنها می توان از اسم مصدر استفاده کرد عبارتند از :

avoid – enjoy – finish – imagine – keep – mind – miss – like – stop – mind – dislike

تذکر : پس از برخی از افعال هم می توان از اسم مصدر و هم از مصدر با to استفاده کرد . تعدادی از این افعال عبارتند از :

allow – begin – forget – mean – like – prefer – remember – agree

 

He likes to go / going to the park.

 

3-پس از حروف اضافه مانند : on – in – at – from – of )( از اسم مصدر استفاده می شود .

I am tired of sitting here.

 

4- پس از ترکیبات زیر از اسم مصدر استفاده می شود .

It's no good – It's no use – can't help – can't stand

It is no good going outside in this rainy day.

 

یادآوری :اسم مصدر می تواند به تنهایی یا همراه یک عبارت بکار رود .

Learning is easy.

Learning English is easy.

Learning English at school is easy.

some به معنی مقداری یا تعدادی صفت مقدار می باشد و می تواند قبل از اسمهای قابل شمارش جـمع و همچنین قبل از اسمهای غیر قابل شمارش بکار رود .

 

I have some books.

I have some money.

اغلب در جمــلات مثبت بــکار می رود و معادل آن در جملات منفی و سـوالی کلمه ی anyبه معنی هیچ یا اصــلا می باشد . توضیح اینکه any همــانند some مـی تواند هم قبـل از اسمهای قابــل شمارش جمع و هم قبل از اسمهای غیر قابل شمارش بکار رود .

 

There are some pens on the table.

There are not any pens on the table.

Are there any pens on the table?

 

تذکر1 : در جمـــلات منفی می توانیم ترکیب not any را حذف کرده و بجای آنــــها کلمـه ی no را قـرار دهیم . no نیز همــانند some و any هم قبل از اسمهای قابــــل شمارش جمـع و هم قبــــل از اسمهای غیر قابل شمارش بکار می رود .

تذکر2 : no در جملات مثبت بکار می رود ولی به جمله مفهوم منفی می بخشد .

 

There are not any pens on the table.

There are no pens on the table.

 

I did not drink any milk.

I drank no milk.

 

یادآوری :کلمات مرکبی که با someany و no ساخته می شوند نیزاز قوانین فوق پیروی می کنند.

anybody – anyone - anything

nobody - no one - nothing

 

I see somebody in the library.

She didn't eat anything.

You will say nothing.

در انگلیسـی به دو کلمه ی a و an حروف تعریف نامعین و به کلمه ی the حرف تعریف معین گویند.

 

کاربرد حروف تعریف نامعین ( aan )

1-چنانچه اسمــی از نظر شنونده نامشخص باشد قبل از آن اسم حرف تعریف نامعین بکار می رود.

تذکر1 : حروف تعریف نامعین فقط قبل از اسمهای قابل شمارش مفرد بکار می رود .

تذکر2 : an را قبل از اسمهای مفردی بکار می بریم که با یکی از حــروف صدادار ( a –e –i-o –u ) شروع شده باشند . قبل از بقیه ی اسمها a بکار می رود .

a / book-teacher-radio-man

an / apple-arm-hour-engineer

 

تذکر3 :اگر بخواهیم اسمی را که با یک صفت همراه است بشکل نکـــره بیان کنیم ، a یا an را قبل از صفت بکار می بریم .

2- a یا an عـــلاوه بر اینکه اسم را نکره می کند ، قبل از نام شغلها بکــار رفته و در این حالت معنی نمی دهند .

He is a doctor. He is an engineer.

 

کاربرد حرف تعریف معین ( the )

1-چنانچه اسمی از نظر شنونده معلوم و مشخص ( معرفه ) باشد ، قبل از آن اسم حرف تعریف معین بکار می رود ولی چنانچه اسمی بطور عـام و کلـی در جمله ای مطـرح شود نیازی به حـــرف تعریف نیست .

Books are good friends.

The books which you bought are interesting.

 

در جمله ی اول کلمــه ی books بطور عام مطرح شده است که در اینصورت نیازی به the نیست در حالیکه در جمله ی دوم books از نظر شنونده مشخص و معلــوم می باشد که این صورت قبل از آن the بکار رفته است .

تذکر : the بر خلاف a یا an می تواند قبل از انواع اسمها ، چه مفرد و چه جمع و چه قابل شمارش و چه غیر قابل شمارش قرار گیرد .

2-علاوه بر کاربرد کلی فوق که برای the ذکر شد ، در موارد زیر نیز حتما از the استفاده می شود .

a ) قبل از نام اشیاء منحصر به فرد جهــان مانند خورشید ، ماه ، زمین و جهـــات جغرافیایی از the استفاده می شود .

The sun rises in the east and sets in the west.

 

b ) چنانچه اسم نکــره ای برای بار دوم یا بیشتر در جمله ای ذکــر شود ، آن اسم بدنبال the بکــار میرود .

Yesterday I saw a man. The man was crossing the street.

 

c ) چنانچه بعد از اسمی یکی از ضمایر موصولی نظیر who-whom-which و آمده باشد ، قبـل از آن اسم از the استفاده می شود .

The man who is coming here is Ali's father.

 

d ) چنانچه دو اسم بوسیله ی حرف اضافه of در حالت اضافه قرار گیرند ، قبـــل از آن دو اسم the بکار می رود .

This is the door of the classroom.

 

e ) قبل از صفات عالی از حرف تعریف the استفاده می شود .

He is the tallest man.

 

f ) در جملات امری بعد از فعل اصلی اسم همراه the بکار می رود .

Clean the blackboard , please.

 

g ) کلماتی مانند صبح ، بعدازظهر ، عصر که به اجزاء روز مربوط می شوند همیشه همراه the بکـار می روند .

در موارد زیر the بکار نمی رود .

1-قبل از نام قاره ها ، کشورها ، استانها ، شهرها و روستاها

ترتیب قرار گرفتن صفات

1- صفات بیشتر اوقات قبل از اسم می آیند و ترتیب قرار گرفتن آنها کمی پیچیده و گاهی اوقات گیج کننده اند. برای مثال : اول اندازه آن شی بعد جدید یا قدیمی بودن آن چیز و بعد شکل آن و بعد صفت رنگ استفاده شود و بعد جایی که آن چیز از آنجا می آید و سپس جنس آن چیز (یعنی از چه چیزی ساخته شده است) و بعد هدف از ساخت آن چیز (یعنی آن چیز به چه دردی می خورد) و در آخر نام آن.

مثل:

Big Old Red Spanish Leather Riding boots

 

2- صفات دیگر قبل ازاین صفات می آیند ولی طرز قرار گرفتن آنها به قدری پیچیده است که نمی توان قانون ثابتی برای نوشتن آنها ارائه کرد.

برای مثال:

A big black cat. (Not a black big cat)

یک گربه سیاه بزرگ

 

The round glass table. (Not the glass round table)

میزشیشه ای گرد

 

3- کلماتی مثل first , last , next معمولاً قبل از اعداد به کار می روند.

The first three days. (Not the three first days)

سه روز اول

 

My last two jobs. (Not my two last jobs)

دو شغل آخر من

 

جای قرار گرفتن صفات در جمله

صفات در جمله می توانند در دو مکان استفاده شوند.

۱- قبل از اسم

The new secretary doesn't like me.

منشی جدید مرا دوست ندارد

 

She married a rich businessman.

او با یک تاجر ثروتمندی ازدواج کرد

 

2- بعد از افعال ربطی مثل : seem , look , appear , feel , …

That dress is new, isn't it?

آن لباس نو است نه؟

 

He looks rich.

او ثروتمند به نظر می رسد.

 

3- بعضی از صفات بعد از فعل می آیند و نمی توان قبل از اسم از آنها استفاده کرد.

مثل :

ill, well, afraid, alive, alone, asleep, …

به جای آنها ما می توانیم از صفات زیر قبل از اسم استفاده کنیم .

sick, healthy, frightened, living, lone, sleeping, …

 

He looks ill. (He is a sick man)

او مریض به نظر میرسد

 

Your mother is very well. (She is a very healthy woman)

حال مادر شما خیلی خوب است. (او زن سالمی است)

 

She is asleep. (Here is a sleepy baby)

او خواب است .(کودک خواب اینجا است)

 

4- وقتی که صحبت از اندازه و اندازه گیری است صفت اندازه بعد از اسم واحد اندازه گیری می آید .

Two meters high. (Not high two meters)

طرز قرار گرفتن صفات قبل از اسم

 

ترتیب قرار گرفتن صفات پیش از اسم در زبان انگلیسی طبق الگوی زیر می باشد.

 

اسم + جنس (نوع) + ملیّت + رنگ + اندازه + عدد

 

I have two big colorful Persian wooden carpets.

 

نکته 1: صفات اشاره this – that – these – those و حرف تعریف the و نیز صفات ملکی my – your , …

الف) بر دیگر صفات مقدم هستند.

ب) با یکدیگر بکار نمیروند.

- The three good student

- This sweet red roses

- My poor old dog

در جملات بالا کلمات the – this – myقبل از صفات دیگر بکار رفته اند.

 

نکته 2: سه واژه all ، both و half مقدم بر صفات ملکی و حرف تعریف the استفاده میشوند.

- all the boys

- both my eyes

- all her books

 

نکته 3: واژه half مقدم بر a و an می باشد.

- half a minute

- half an hour

 

1) Which sentence is grammatically wrong?

a) Don’t look at the people sitting over there.

b) Our brain can keep a record of past events.

c) The cars that are sold are very expensive.

d) The new Japanese blue car will become cheaper.ü

 

ترتیب قرار گرفتن صفات در گزینه d اشتباه است. رنگ باید قبل از ملیت قرار بگیرد پس گزینه d از نظر گرامری غلط است و باید جمله به این صورت باشد:

The new blue Japanese car will be come cheaper.

 

2) Which sentence is grammatically right?

a) The white large cotton shirt was very beautiful.

b) The large white cotton shirt was very beautiful.ü

c) The cotton white large shirt was very beautiful.

d) The beautiful cotton white shirt was very large.

گزینه b درست است. ترتیب قرار گرفتن صفات صحیح است.
